In response to a question from Travel Extra this week, Tourism Ireland CEO, Niall Gibbons (pictured with chair Brian Ambrose) said that the island of Ireland attracted 9.3m visitors in 2015 and he expected that figure to rise to 9.6m in 2016 (listen here). He said that marketing support was in place for a direct Dublin-Beijing flight should it occur (listen here).

Classic Collections Irish operation is officially up and running since Thursday, headed up by Niall McDonnell who itemised features such as 20kg luggage allowance, free Dublin Airport Lounge access for bookings made before the end of February and most of all private transfers (listen here): if five people arrive at Malaga airport they get separate private transfers, they do not travel together. He said Classic Collections will continue to work with travel agents and will not accept online bookings because their offering does not suit online. Chinese Ambassador Xu Jianguo (listen here) came to Kildare Village to open an exhibition by photographer Matthew Thompson as part of the Village’s year of the monkey Chinese new year celebrations. China is one of the village’s most important markets by spend and they have mandarin-speaking guides available. Speaking to Travel Extra at the event Ambassador Xu reiterated his desire for a direct flight from Ireland to China, something Dublin Airport’s Kevin Toland said recently was a question of when and not if. CEO Niall Gibbons (listen here) set out Tourism Ireland’s marketing priorities for 2016 and said that the brand was performing strongly across all main markets, reporting Ireland has the fifth strongest brand in the world according to the World Economic Forum in Davos. Target is to increase spend by 5pc to €4.4bn, and 5-10pc capacity increase in summer to 500,000 seats a week, air and sea. The questions and answers session (listen here) raised questions about what ministers would be travelling on St Patrick’s Day and a suggestion that currency fluctuations are responsible for only 1pc of an increase in tourism (listen here). Tourism Minister Paschal Donohoe (pictured) took time off the election campaign to support the campaign (listen here). New buildings to go green in 2016 include Molle Antonelliana in Turin, Japan’s two first greenings, the light rail system in Addis Adaba, and Elevador Lacerda, the world’s largest urban elevator in Salvador in Brazil. Boston Red Sox will dress in green for their match against Florida on March 17 and Fenway Park will light up in green. On Monday, 100 tourism stake holders turned out for an event organised by Tourism Ireland in the Davenport Hotel highlighting the potential of Spain and Italy for Irish tourism. Tourism Ireland chair Brian Ambrose said APD is not going to be tackled until 2017 at least (listen here). He suggested that the issue of VAT parity with the 26 counties may be raised during the forthcoming Stormont elections. The comments were in response to a question from Travel Extra.

Minister Jan O’Sullivan launched Limerick City and County Councils’ food strategy for Limerick 2016-18 in a bid to ear Limerick Food Destination status over the next three years. The plan aims to grow the local food tourism sector by 6pc with 10pc additional sales growth for producers.One hundred food producers and suppliers attended the event in the Strand Hotel.

Over 100 chefs have already signed up for a three-day charity cycle in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, part of the Burren Slowfood Festival. The event is being organised by Shane Smith of YesChef magazine. A report by David O’Grady’s e-travel.ie says 58pc of their cruise sales are for four-star ships and 35pc are for five-star ships. They estimate 35,000 passengers from Ireland are expected to cruise this year, up 20pc since 2014 and 42pc of Irish cruisers are now under 40. The average price paid in 2015 for a fly cruise package was €1,476 in 2015 versus €1,383 in 2014 and stateroom sales breakdown to approximately 65pc balconies, 28pc inside and 7pc ocean view. So far in 2016 the trend seems to be upwardly mobile to the 5 and 6 star luxury liners like Celebrity, Silversea, Cunard and Crystal Cruises. They say cruise sales are up as much as 46pc for some agents in January.
