Behind the Headlines

Margaret Chan whoOn Monday, World Health Organisation director Margaret Chan declared that the clusters of brain-damaged babies born in Brazil – linked to but not proven to be caused by the Zika virus – constitute a public health emergency of international concern. It has created unprecedented confusion in the travel industry. Honeymoon couples bound for the Caribbean have been panicking and demanding refunds which the travel trade has not been able to provide. Some airlines are allowing pregnant women to change their tickets but are not compensating for ground arrangements. Until government advisories kick in, travel insurance companies will not compensate women for changing their plans, many of them destined for Mexico (37 cases), Dominican Republic (10 cases) and Jamaica (no cases as yet), but oddly not the USA (30 cases).Officials from Mexico’s Ministry of Health insisted that the Zika virus poses no risk to tourists in meetings with tour operators. It is a lot of fuss over comparatively small risk. Dengue fever carried by the same mosquito kills 20,000 people a year compared with the 270 cases of microcephaly believed to be caused by the Zika virus, and 3,448 other cases suspected in the Recife area of Brazil. Is this uncertainty enough for people to change their travel plans? Listen to Eoghan Corry speaking on the issue on Neil Prendiville’s show on Red FM (listen here) and on 96Fm (listen here). DFA advice is for males to wear a condom for a month after return from Zika infected area. The war on the mosquito could not just help the case against Zika, but also dengue and yellow fever. Let us spray.

GPO four_1737The GPO was a witness to history, we are not interpreting it, the GPO Witness History (website) director of communications Barney Whelan, who hands over the nearly completed centre on February 12, assured the journalist from the Daily Mail who asked about the “contested history” of 1916 in advance of the new visitor centre opening on March 29 (listen here). Entry for the anticipated 300,000 visitors a year costs €10, and will be to the right of the façade. The exit leads on to Princes Street, having passed through the hidden jewels of the world’s oldest functioning general post office. For Barney’s description of the centre and its conception listen here. For Aline FitzGerald (listen here).  “Why didn’t they occupy YO! Sushi,” one travel writer commented as he surveyed the tuna sandwiches on offer. Travel Extra mused at the press conference that handling the 300,000 visitors would not be a problem, it is fewer than the GPO accommodated on that fateful day on Easter Monday 1916 (listen here). For the Q&A at the press conference listen here. Picture shows John Horgan, Aline FitzGerald, Barney Whelan and Nandi O’Sullivan. Aidan McGuinness is the project manager for the centre. See more pictures here or connect with the album on Facebook.

caroline boland speaking copyThe train has left the station as regards global warming,” Professor Enda McGovern told Féile na Stoirme in Dingle, a “storm festival” designed to kick-start winter tourism to the Dingle peninsula, where, as Travel Extra’s Eoghan Corry pointed out, trans-Atlantic travel was invented at Brandon Creek. The eoghan susan enda 002 copyfestival addressed coastal erosion and sustainable tourism, while Travel Extra’s editor noted that Kerry, which attracts more visitors than counties like Iceland, Fiji and Myanmar, could have a waterfall-and-surf winter product which would augment its overcrowded summer product, Pictures shows Travel Extra’s Eoghan Corry with Professor Enda McGovern and Susan Vickers of Clean Coasts South West. The festival continues today with walks in Fermoyle (10.30am), treasure hunt (12noon), and talks at Dingle Oceanworld (11.30) and Anascaul (12 noon). See here.
