The LAExperience event in the Marker Hotel in Dublin helped create a little excitement for Aer Lingus big-ticket route launch for this summer, with tumbling dancers, hair and make-up, bicycle smoothies and hoop yoga on offer for invited media. The direct service to LAX which is due to recommence on Thursday (yes, Travel Extra will be travelling on your behalf). Watch here the fun and frolics from the event. Aer Lingus say Los Angeles is a very different route from the San Francisco service which Aer Lingus resumed in 2014, with fewer “beyond” connections on the American side. Florida is anticipating a record 100,000 visitors from Ireland in 2016, according to Colin Brodie from Visit Florida who hosted 70 members of the travel trade at and event in the Morrison Hotel. Canada has been the star performer among destinations served from Dublin airport, airport MD Vincent Harrison told 65 guests at a function in the Canadian Embassy on Thursday, watch here (or listen here). The pre-launch event was to promote the Dublin to Vancouver 3w direct service which Air Canada Rouge commences on June 10, the only widebody service to Canada this summer with a 280-seat Boeing 767-300 aircraft in a two class configuration, operating until October 9. Flights will depart Dublin at 11.35 on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, arriving at 13.35 in Vancouver. The return service will depart Vancouver at 15.05 arriving in Dublin at 08.35 the next morning. Kildare Fáilte’s new chair Tony Lenehan told guests at an event in Punchestown that he welcomed input into a new strategy document for the county to help double the number of overnights spent in Kildare by 2020. It is a big year for Kildare tourism with a food festival associated with the Irish Open in Straffan in May and with the Derby in the Curragh in June. Fanad Lighthouse opened its new visitor centre and three accommodation unties to the public on Friday, and now becomes the second stop on the wild Atlantic way going south. It is the only lighthouse in the Gaeltacht open to the public. Failte Ireland CEO Shaun Quinn spoke at the opening. Watch here interview with Eimear MacMathuna, manager of the facility.

Tryphavana Cross and Reginald Charlot of NYC & Company hosted travel agents at a table quiz in The Marker Hotel to publicise the city’s tourist programme for 2016. By July 2016, 500 state-of-the-art LinkNYC kiosks will come to New York City’s five boroughs, offering free high-speed Internet, phone calls, and device charging for residents and visitors. Staten Island Ferry service was expanded to run every 30 minutes, seven days a week, between St. George Ferry Terminal in Staten Island and Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan.he MTA’s Second Avenue Subway will be New York City’s first major expansion of the subway system in more than 50 years, due December 2016, Mark Ashfield was the quiz winner.

Royal Caribbean will host 200 trade partners fromIreland on the pre-inaugural sailing from Southampton on Friday May 20 until Sunday May 22, making this the largest ever Irish trade event on board a cruise ship and the largest exodus of travel trade on one outing since the ITAA conferences in Benalmadena in 1996 and Algarve in 1999. Pamela Brownlee of Flyaway Travel won most forward thinking agent at the TTG awards in Birmingham. Tom Donohue won best Irish agent and Sandra Corkin of Oasis the best agent from the north. Dublin once had a Viking queen called Aud the Deep-minded. Ballina now has their own.

- Marriott plans to open 17 new properties across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
- Disney has reintroduced free dining when booking a Disney moderate, deluxe or deluxe villa resort or free breakfast for Disney value resorts.
- Wendy Wu Tours unveiled a brand new 11-day tour for winter 2017 where travellers can spend a day at the Sapporo Snow Festival.
- EU mobile roaming charges were reduced this week. The maximum cost of making a call has been reduced from 19c to 5c per minute plus the domestic network’s price. The charge for downloading data has been reduced from 20c per MB to 5c per MB plus the domes network’s price.
Food and Wine
- Nancy’s Barn of Ballyliffen, Co Donegal was named All-Ireland Chowder Champion at the sixth annual All-Ireland Chowder Cook-off in Kinsale.
- Burren Slow Food Week Festival 2016 takes place May 27–29.

Ryanair announced four winter 2016 routes from Belfast International to Gdansk, Warsaw and Wroclaw, in addition to the seven routes announced earlier to Alicante, Berlin, Krakow, Lanzarote, Malaga, Milan and Tenerife
Dublin Airport issued a statement detailing its busiest ever summer, with seven short-haul and six long-haul destinations added to the flight schedule, five of these already served by other carriers. For ten weeks this summer Dublin will be busier than the busiest week of last summer. North America capacity is up 13pc with 24 flights a day and 170 flights a week to 12 USA and four Canadian destinations, Europe up 9pc.
Whither Stobart Air? This week there was an intriguing referenence about the former Aer Arann in The Irish Times to IAA concern about “management tensions.“ Tim Jeans has been replaced as chairman by Stobart Group CEO Andrew Tinkler. CEO of Stobart Air, Sean Brogan, would like to head a buy-out. Cityjet may also be interesting with Aer Lingus’s chariman Willie Walsh watching his franchise with a stern eye.
The large selection panel is still finding it difficult to find a new director of administration for the Commission for Aviation Regulation. Re-advertising the position is under consideration.

- Shannon Airport is the main sponsor of this year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ennis.
- WOW air launched a Snapchat competition, calling on entrants to submit a Snap Story to snaptraveler.wowair.com. The winners will each visit four destinations serviced by the airline and document their travels on Snapchat.
- Shannon Group reported post-tax profits of €7.3m for 2015. Passenger numbers at Shannon Airport were up 5pc last year.
- As part of its Batman v Superman marketing campaign, Turkish Airlines drove the Batmobile to Istanbul. See the promo video in this week’s Travel Extra TV.
- A survey by Skyscanner found that Dublin Airport is the most popular airport for self-connecting passengers.
- Boeing will deliver a record number of aircraft to Turkish Airlines this year: six 777-300ERs and 20 Next Generation 737-800s.
Dacia partnered with Stena Line. Passengers are offering up to 50pc off sailings from Ireland to Britain and up to 20pc off sailings from Ireland to France when they order and register a 161 Dacia before May 31.
- Forty-four passengers on Rhapsody of the Seas reportedly had to abandon their cruise after a large wave broke windows and flooded cabins during the first night of a nine-night cruise in the Mediterranean.
- Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 was denied entry to Aqaba and Salalah because of a suspected outbreak of norovirus.
- Godmother Claudine Pepin, daughter of French chef Jacques Pepin, christened Oceania Cruises’ 684-passenger Sirena in Barcelona.
- Hurtigruten will introduce its young explorers programme to MS Midnatsol from November 2016 to March 2017. The programme, aimed at passengers aged seven to 13, features activities focused on the environment.
- Disney Cruise Lines relaxed the dress code at its adult-only restaurant, Palo, allowing passengers to wear jeans.
The race is on for a new CEO for Fáilte Ireland with the imminent departure of Shaun Quinn. John Concannon and Paul Keeley are the leading internal candidates but the question is whether the ex-Ryanair chair of Fáilte Ireland Michael Cawley would prefer someone from an aviation or retail background.
- The refurbishment of Dublin T1 will reportedly leave no Fáilte Ireland information desk in the terminal which receives more incoming visitors than any other in the State.
- Tourism Ireland continues its Game of Thrones advertising campaign as the popular series launched its sixth season. The 2016 campaign includes the unveiling of 10 carved doors depicting moments from the show and a Game of Thrones-themed stamp.
- CSO figures show that visits to Ireland between January and March were up 16.6pc YOY.
- EPIC Ireland, an interactive visitor experience documenting the influence of Irish diaspora, opens to the public at CHQ on Custom House Quay this Thursday (May 7).
- Brian Cody helped launch the new zip line at Castlecome Discovery Park. At 300m long, it claims to be Ireland’s longest over-water zip line.
- Martin Kaymer confirmed that he will participate in this month’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at The K Club.
